It's a very exciting day for me! Director John Kinhart filmed me talking about mini-comics back in 2008 for a documentary he was going to make about comics. I haven't heard from him in awhile, and assumed the project was on the back-burner. Today, he released a 7 minute short made from the footage he shot of me. I almost can't believe that's me, and my books, and me trying to ink a line with nervous hands. It's a real thrill though, and I am so thankful that this exists. Thanks to John! Click here to view.

What a great time we had in New York. The first day we were there we nearly walked the length of Manhattan, well, from Little Italy to Central Park. The weather was great, and we were so happy to be there. We stayed in Brooklyn with Max's friend Will. The Brooklyn Comics Festival was great; we were able to see tons of friends and meet people we hadn't met before, like Gary Panter and Matthew Thurber. We also hung out with friends Marco, Adam, and Fran. Great to see everyone, and to have people humor us as we took photos and looked around in wonder.

Your Zine is Alive and Well and Living in ZAPP is a live exhibition of zines from the ZAPP collection, featuring interactive installations, live screenprinting and many rare and historically significant zines, including "Spaceteer," a rare sci-fi fan fiction zine from 1949; "The Art of Bunditsu," an early collection of poems and illustrations by famed science fiction writer Ursula K. LeGuin; and "Choking on Sixth," the first chapbook released by poet Jesse Bernstein.
Playfully spinning on the stark dogmas of museums and archives, expect fake security cameras and guards and protective reading tools designed to toy with the idea of preservation, a reminder of the importance of zines as a means of documenting alternative cultures across the country at a time before mass Internet connectivity.

Your Zine is Alive and Well and Living in ZAPP is free and runs December 8 - January 6 during Hugo House’s business hours with an opening party on December 8, 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with the Blitz Art Walk. The bar will be open serving drinks specials, and there will be a bake sale (with proceeds supporting the archive) and an area for current zine writers and artists to share, trade or sell their work.

Max and I will have books here for sale, and I'm making German Chocolate Cupcakes for the Bake Sale.

Short Run is over, after 5 months of planning, and the build up of a lifetime, and the success we never imagined, it's time to move on to other things. We (Short Run Founders) are curating a table of local mini-comics, zines and art books for Fictilis Gallery on Dec. 1st for the 1st Thursday Art Walk, but I won't personally be there because Max and I are flying to New York that very day. We will be there for about 5 days and hope to truly enjoy it together; exploring, eating, and attending The Brooklyn Comics Festival for the first time.

It's been an amazing week for Short Run. We got the coveted Saturday "Suggested Event" by The Stranger, interviews with Fantagraphics and Seattleite Magazine, and last night we did a short interview with Inkstuds, a radio show out of Vancouver that's all about comics.

FICTILIS presents a gallery-wide installation/exhibition celebrating the art of xerography (photocopying). The FICTILIS space will transform into a pop-up copy shop that is pre-stocked with a wide selection of ready-to-copy artworks, by artists from Seattle and beyond, which will blanket the space’s 17-ft-high walls. Whew. Screen printing is hard work. Thanks to master screen printer Tory Franklin, who acted as our print tech, me and the other women of Short Run were able to print three 2-colour poster designs in 1 1/2 days. These photos are a sneak peek, with the real thing coming soon to the Short Run website and telephone poles every where. The 3 posters were designed by Martine Workman, Eroyn Franklin, and Max Clotfelter.

This completes the series that began in 2002. That was the year that I left the office world and returned to art school. I moved to Vancouver, BC and lived there happily for the next 4 years. I wish these 7 zines read in order would tell the story of my time there, but the format varies wildly and at the end you're left with many questions. They show some good times and sad times and overall, I hope, they are a fun read. Looking back, it's weird to me what I chose to include. Anyway, if you'd like #7, or any in the series, let me know.

A nice weekend in Portland despite some challenges. We had a great time eating food from street carts and lounging in an expensive hotel that we might not be able to afford again (unless I win another gift certificate). Beautiful weather for walking around a beautiful city. I met a long-time pen-pal Jerianne (editor of Zine World), who just moved to Portland. Also, I handed out fliers for Short Run, hoping that some of the great zinesters of Portland might come to Seattle for a day in November.

I had fun with Gary and Alex at the WWE match on Sunday. It was crowded and I had to squish next to a handicapped mother, her daughter, and son in full juggalo face-paint. They had signs that read: We love Randy Orton, Hot, Sexy Man!

The biggest thrill was seeing Bret Hart come out as a surprise guest, I never thought I'd see that guy in person. The entire pay-per-view was dedicated to Macho Man Randy Savage who died tragically on May 20th.

Going to see Chester Brown tonight at Elliott Bay Books. I loved "I Never Liked You", felt I could really relate to the very real characters. Unfortunately, "Paying For It" did not allow me the same experience.

LATER: Max and I both had Chester Brown sign our books. He was a really nice guy! I enjoyed his slideshow, though overall the book still makes me uncomfortable. As an auto-bio comic artist myself, I have to think, man, is anything "sacred", or too personal for print? (The above photo looks like Max and Chester were hanging out in a basement, that's the Elliott Bay Books downstairs reading space.)

Teenage Obsession #1: Sunfire Romance Novels

These teen historical romances were one of my obsessions as a young girl. All I know about US history comes from these books! Here's a great description. I only wish I had them all now, to save for my nieces for when they get older. Standing in front of the rack at Waldenbooks at the mall and deciding which one I'd buy next was a big decision. I'd have to take into account 1. story synapsis, 2. how independent and strong the heroine looked, and 2. how good looking were the guys she'd have to choose between. Hard choices! Some of my favourites are above.

Back in Washington

A really good time at Stumptown, the best part once again was seeing so many friends and cool people. A very intense moment when we realized we left our money bag in the hotel room we just checked out of, and when I went to retrieve it, it had been stolen. The hotel was extremely uncooperative, and I had to get Max there, and then we had to call the police. We made such a scene in the lobby, and pretty much said we wouldn't be leaving without our money, then the money bag mysteriously showed up behind the couch in our room (which we never even went near!). What a bunch of scums. I bought a lot of books and traded a lot as well. Met Dave Kiersh in person for the first time (we've been pen-pals for 10 years!), got to hang out with out of town friends and see Jesse Reklaw's band perform at Backspace (after-party). A really nice 2 days in Portland, despite the crime.

Employee Art Show

Employee Art Show opening last night (I work in a retirement home), which was fun and really special to me. I felt the support of three dozen grandparents last night, it can't get better than that. Some good quotes: "Nice sketches!", "So do you know what you are going to draw ahead of time, or do you just let the pen do all the work?".

The next two photos are from Heidi Estey's show, "Shelter", who has hung her artwork in the trees outside St. Immanuel Church on Harvard St. behind Seattle Central. I'm glad I took these photos, because I don't think these pieces will last the weekend. There's too many hoodlums out there looking for a good jar!

We will be at Table E27, which is the furthest from the entrance as you can possibly be, but right in front of the bathrooms! This will be maybe our best year yet (or a total disaster!).

I will have 3 new books: Forevertron, a fanzine; Weeknight Casserole; and Two Days Away From Staring At Birds From A Park Bench (a story of unemployment). Max and Jason will have some new books too.
